Today, I’m writing about the mythical <em>morning routine.</em> </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">If you and I talk regularly, you know that I am both constantly trying to become a morning person and always trying to find more routines. My big goal for years has been to design the ultimate morning routine – one that includes movement, breathwork, meditation, outdoor time, journaling, gratitude, planning, and a nutritious breakfast. And yet, week after week, I constantly push the boundaries of how late I can wake up and still have time to shower before logging onto work. </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">At this point, I should just accept that maybe I’m not meant to be a morning person, and that the ultimate morning routine is a myth. My evenings can make or break my mornings, and holding my tired, end-of-day self accountable to my morning self is hard, but so worth it. In order to help my morning self, I try to have my night-before self pick out my outfit, tidy up my room, write down any must-do’s, and fill up my water bottle so I can start chugging along when my alarm goes off. </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><strong>Ingredient #3:</strong> Allow myself grace. Now, this can be a tricky one – my morning self will often try to negotiate that sleeping in an extra 30 minutes is showing myself grace. But this is where my previous topics around listening to your body and your intuition come into play. Even if I don’t like to admit it, I can tell when I want more sleep in the morning vs when I need more sleep or I won’t be able to function properly. And when it’s the latter, I am going to work on letting my body rest without beating myself up about it afterwards. </p>
