I’m writing this newsletter earlier than I normally do because today we’re talking about an uncomfy topic: money.

Talking about money is hard for so many reasons, and for a lot of people, it’s tied into trauma and anxiety. Super valid. But I’m not going to dig into why it’s so hard to talk about. There are a thousand think pieces that try to answer that question, and I don’t think I have anything new to add to that conversation.

What I’m here to talk about is a confession, of sorts. I’m terrible with money. Absolutely terrible. I have never been able to budget, I barely have a savings account, and I really spend almost every dollar I make.

It’s not great, friend. I’ve turned my non-stop spending into a bit of a joke among some friends, but I don’t have a huge safety net to bail me out if this comes crashing down. And I constantly feel pressure to get it together.

After having to pay some big bills and losing some expensive tech (RIP the best headphones I ever owned), I’m especially feeling that pressure right now.

Thus, the goal for the next couple of weeks: get the money issue under control. Do you have any solid money tips for me?

The Recipe Breakdown

Lemon: Money probs. This has been such a longstanding issue with me that some of these ingredients are tried and true, while some are on the newer side of things.

Ingredient #1: Online resources. There are so many great, free online resources out there around money that I heavily rely on. My personal fav has to be The Financial Diet, who put out consistently good and helpful content. Right now, I’m using their Impulse Spending Tracker. Other fav resources include the Broke to Woke Challenge from Morgan Blackman of Holistic Bucks. And for newsletters, She Spends always gives out some thoughtful advice.

Ingredient #2: Budget app. There are so many great budget apps out there and I highly suggest reading through the pros and cons of each one. Right now I use Mint, which works pretty well. I’ve also heard good things about You Need a Budget. The reason I like budget apps, instead of a paper budget, is because I often forget about recurring payments or other regular charges, but with an automatic budget tool, it remembers for me.

Ingredient #3: Nest egg. I think the only aspect of the money world that I am doing correctly is having a nest egg. Again, I use an app for this (Ellevest) so that I can automatically pull $20-50 per month into my nest egg account. That way, I can just sit back and let that account build. It’s like a second savings account that I don’t have spending access for, so I know I’ll have a small bit of cash in case of an emergency.

πŸ’œ @PrisonCulture (aka abolitionist Mariame Kaba) pulled together a helpful doc on 9 Solidarity Commitments to/with Incarcerated People for 2021. We all can do better and I’m going to work through this list over the next month or so. If you don’t feel like you can handle any more commitments, at least go through and donate what you can afford to the suggested organizations.
